No. 13 Gonzaga powers to 72-point demolition of Southern Utah

Braden Huff scored 22 points on 11-of-13 shooting and collected six rebounds as No. 13 Gonzaga steamrolled Southern Utah 122-50 in a nonconference game on Monday night at Spokane, Wash.

Davis Fogle scored 19 points and Mario Saint-Supery added 16 points and six steals for the Bulldogs (5-0), who have won their games by an average of 36.2 points.

Graham Ike and Adam Miller added 13 points apiece as Gonzaga produced their largest winning margin vs. a Division I program. The Bulldogs’ record is a 78-point margin, accomplished with a 120-42 victory over NAIA Eastern Oregon on Dec. 28, 2022.

The 72-point margin of defeat was the worst in Southern Utah history. The old mark was 68 when the Thunderbirds lost 132-64 to Oklahoma on Dec. 20, 1988.

The Bulldogs shot a sizzling 68.1% from the field, including 8 of 14 (57.1%) from 3-point range. Gonzaga held a 44-26 rebounding advantage, and its largest lead was 75 points.

Elijah Duval had 10 points for Southern Utah (1-4) but committed seven of the team’s 23 turnovers.

The Thunderbirds shot 29.5% from the field and were 4 of 25 (16%) from behind the arc.

Gonzaga controlled the contest throughout, and its lead reached 70 when Saint-Supery drained a 3-pointer with 3:05 remaining.

Joaquim ArauzMoore connected on a trey to push the margin to 75 with 1:18 to play before the Thunderbirds scored the game’s final three points.

Ike and Saint-Supery scored 11 points apiece in the first half as Gonzaga led 59-27.

The Bulldogs scored the first nine points and 17 of the first 19.

Gonzaga later ripped off 11 consecutive points with Huff’s jumper ending it making it 34-12 with 8:58 remaining in the half.

Ike made two free throws to cap a 10-0 burst and boost the lead over 30 at 52-21 with 2:44 left before the break.

The onslaught continued in the second half as the Zags scored nine of the first 12 points to push the lead to 68-30 with 16:15 left in the game.
