The Los Angeles Angels bought out the contract of third baseman Anthony Rendon, The Athletic reported Tuesday, restructuring the final season of a seven-year, $245-million free-agent deal signed before the 2020 season.

Rendon, 35, was owed $38.6 million in 2026. The report did not indicate how much of that remaining salary Rendon will receive, but whatever remains will reportedly be deferred for three years, or as many as five.

The Angels added Rendon on a massive free-agent contract after he helped the Washington Nationals to a World Series title in 2019. Rendon was named an All-Star that season after he batted .319 with 44 home runs and 126 RBIs. It was his second consecutive season with 44 home runs.

Rendon played 52 games in the shortened 2020 season, his first with the Angels, before a string of injuries began in 2021, starting with a groin strain. Knee, hamstring and hip issues later surfaced that season. A wrist injury limited his 2022 season while a leg fracture cut short his 2023 campaign.

Rendon never played more than 58 games in his five seasons on the field for the Angels. He did not play at all in 2025 because of a left hip injury that required surgery.

Rendon played 257 of a possible 1,032 games over the life of the deal and batted .242 for the Angels with 22 home runs and 125 RBIs. That compares to a .290 batting average with 136 home runs and 546 RBIs in 916 games over seven seasons for the Nationals.
