Italian golfer Andrea Pavan, a two-time winner on the DP World Tour, is hospitalized after reportedly falling down an elevator shaft in Cape Town, South Africa.

The news initially was reported by Monday Q Info and confirmed by Golf Channel.

Pavan reportedly was unaware that an elevated cab was missing and he stepped forward after the doors opened. He fell three stories and sustained shoulder and back injuries, per Golf Channel.

Pavan, 36, was transported to a nearby hospital and underwent surgery on Wednesday night.

Per Monday Q Info, “the injuries don’t seem to be life-threatening.”

Pavan withdrew from the Investec South African Open due to injuries sustained in the accident.

Ranked 249th in the world, Pavan won the 2018 D+D Real Czech Masters and the 2019 BMW International Open. He played collegiately at Texas A&M.
