Goalkeeper James Pantemis made six saves as the short-handed Portland Timbers held on for a 1-1 draw with the visiting Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday afternoon.

The Timbers played the final 70 minutes with 10 men after defender Kamal Miller was issued a red card.

Kristoffer Velde scored for Portland (1-3-1, 4 points), which snapped a three-match losing streak.

Joao Klauss tallied for the Galaxy (1-2-2, 5 points), who put an end to a two-game skid. Los Angeles goalie JT Marcinkowski made two saves.

Despite having the man advantage, the Galaxy failed to snap a road winless streak that reached 20 regular-season matches (0-12-8) dating to Oct. 2, 2024.

It was tied 1-1 after an eventful first half.

The Timbers took the lead in the 13th minute after a nifty combination passing play.

Joao Ortiz sent a pass to Antony, who found Velde in stride on the left side of the penalty area. Velde’s low, left-footed shot from 10 yards out found the far side netting as Marcinkowski, making his first MLS start of the season, tried to make a kick save.

The match turned in the 19th minute when Miller fouled Klauss on the Galaxy’s side of midfield while trying to prevent a counterattack. Referee Drew Fischer originally issued a yellow card, but the video assistant referee called for another look, and Fischer upgraded the card to a red after it was determined Miller had recklessly stomped on Klauss’ right Achilles.

The Galaxy tied the score in the 30th minute following a Portland turnover deep in its own end.

Gabriel Pec picked up the loose ball and passed to Marco Reus near the top right of the box. Reus dropped the ball to Klauss with a back-heel pass and he blistered a left-footed shot from 8 yards out past a helpless Pantemis. It was Klauss’ fifth goal in as many MLS matches this season.
