After postponement, Mets turn to Freddy Peralta vs. Rockies

Snow forced the postponement of the Colorado Rockies’ game against the New York Mets on Tuesday in Denver, and it also played a role in Wednesday’s game being moved back six hours as well.

The Mets will hope the bad weather does not derail what could become a turning point in their season.

After finishing April with a 10-21 record, they have won three of their first four contests to start a nine-game road trip. That included Monday’s 4-2 win that also stretched the Rockies’ losing streak to five games.

“We got to continue to win series, but it’s good to see the guys just playing relaxed,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said after Monday’s win. “Just playing their game, playing baseball, not trying to do too much.”

Tuesday’s originally scheduled starters, New York’s Freddy Peralta (1-3, 3.52 ERA) and Colorado’s Michael Lorenzen (2-3, 6.09), will take the mound on Wednesday evening.

Lorenzen returns to the mound after allowing four runs on four hits — including two homers — in 5 1/3 innings in a 6-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds last Thursday. The right-hander also walked three and struck out five, both season highs.

Lorenzen, 34, has faced the Mets 17 times in his career, and five of those were starts. He is 3-1 with a 2.42 ERA and two saves in those outings.

He allowed the Mets just one run on seven hits and no walks in a 4-3 win on April 24. He struck out three over a season-high seven innings to get the win.

Jordan Beck will look to build on his modest three-game hitting streak. Beck, who hit .258 with 16 home runs last season, is just hitting .174 through 25 games in 2026. However, Beck has hit an RBI double and an RBI triple in his last two games.

“I think Beck has been taking good at-bats against lefthanded pitching,” Colorado skipper Warren Schaeffer said after Monday’s loss. “That was a big swing for us tonight, get us back in the ball game. Yeah, hopefully that can carry over.”

In his first season with the Mets after being traded by the Milwaukee Brewers in January, Peralta has lost three straight decisions.

The 29-year-old right-hander did not factor in his last start against Washington on April 30. He went six innings and allowed three runs (one earned) while striking out six against four hits and three walks.

Peralta will make his 10th appearance and ninth start against the Rockies. He is 4-3 with a 3.45 ERA in his career against them after allowing two runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings in the April 24 game. Peralta was charged with the loss.

Rather than Wednesday’s game serving as the series finale, the two teams will now play on Thursday afternoon to wrap up the three-game series.
