“My family and I have been aggressive in our efforts to remain safe and healthy throughout the past seven months. My positive test result, while a shock, is a stark reminder of how we must all remain vigilant in our focus on handwashing, physical distancing and face coverings,” the 56-year-old Sumlin said in a statement shared on Twitter.

Sumlin said he is “feeling well.” While in quarantine, he plans to participate virtually with preparations for the upcoming pandemic-delayed Pac-12 season.

Preseason practices begin Friday and the Wildcats’ season opener is scheduled for Nov. 7 at Utah.

Sumlin is heading into his third season at Arizona after going 5-7 in 2018 and 4-8 in 2019. Prior to taking over in Tucson, he compiled a 35-17 record at Houston (2008-11) and a 51-26 mark at Texas A&M (2012-17). His teams have been to seven bowl games, winning four.

Sumlin is the fourth FBS head coach to publicly announce a positive coronavirus test, joining Florida State’s Mike Norvell, Toledo’s Jason Candle and Arkansas State’s Blake Anderson.
