Pinch hitter Andrew Benintendi belted a tiebreaking grand slam in the eighth inning as the visiting Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees 5-1 on Thursday.

Chicago earned its first win at Yankee Stadium since June 8, 2023, ending a nine-game road skid vs. New York.

In the finale of a three-game series, the White Sox pieced together the winning rally in the eighth against Fernando Cruz (4-2), Tim Hill and Camilo Doval.

Benintendi batted for Randal Grichuk and snapped a 1-1 tie by lifting Doval’s first-pitch sinker into the right-center-field seats.

It was the fourth career grand slam for Benintendi and his second homer as a pinch hitter.

The decisive blow occurred after the first three hitters of the inning reached base.

Sam Antonacci batted for Luisangel Acuna and hit a leadoff double down the right field line off Cruz. Hill hit both pinch hitter Jacob Gonzalez and Tristan Peters with pitches before striking out Chase Meidroth. Doval then entered to face Benintendi.

Colson Montgomery homered for the White Sox in the second inning and tagged out Anthony Volpe at third base in the seventh. Volpe doubled but was thrown out by a one-hop throw from left fielder Junior Perez, who was making his major league debut.

After Chicago opener Bryan Hudson allowed a hit in 1 2/3 scoreless innings, bulk reliever Sean Burke (4-4) gave up one run on five hits in 7 1/3 innings. Burke struck out eight, walked one and threw 88 pitches.

The only run he allowed came on Ryan McMahon’s leadoff homer in the third inning.

New York’s Ryan Weathers allowed Montgomery’s 20th homer among three hits in 6 1/3 innings. The left-hander struck out eight and walked one.

The Yankees had their four-game winning streak end while losing for just the sixth time in the past 21 games.

New York also lost Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the fourth inning when the second baseman fouled a ball off the area around his groin. Volpe replaced him as a pinch hitter.
