Giants workhorse Logan Webb aims to cool off sizzling Marlins

The San Francisco Giants have been highly disappointing so far this season, but the same cannot be said about Logan Webb, their ace right-hander.

Webb (4-4, 3.46 ERA) will start the series finale on Sunday afternoon against the host Miami Marlins, who will be going for a three-game sweep.

Blessed with an ability to induce groundball outs, Webb, 29, is aiming to log more than 192 innings for the fifth straight season. In fact, over the past four completed seasons, Webb has pitched more innings (820) than anyone in baseball. He led the majors in innings pitched in 2023 and 2025 and the National League in 2024.

Not bad for a former Giants fourth-round pick straight out of the California prep ranks.

Webb, who is 1-2 with a 3.61 ERA in seven career appearances against the Marlins, doesn’t throw anything much harder than 93 mph. Yet, he is 2-0 with a 0.39 ERA in three starts so far this month.

“I love his leadership,” Giants first-year manager Tony Vitello said of the two-time All-Star on Saturday. “His personality is infectious to the guys. He has a football mentality.

“I hope our younger guys steal some things on how he game-plans for hitters and how he makes adjustments in games.”

As good as Webb has been again this season, the Giants have the second-worst record in the National League. And that’s with a $199-million total payroll which is the seventh highest in the NL, according to spotrac.com on Saturday.

The Giants lost to Miami 6-3 on Saturday, making four errors in the first four innings.

San Francisco is now 17-25 on the road. Miami is 25-16 at home.

The Marlins — thin on starting pitching behind Sandy Alcantara and Max Meyer — will turn to right-hander Ryan Gusto (0-2, 7.24) on Sunday. He is 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his career against the Giants (two relief appearances, four total innings).

Gusto has yet to win a game for the Marlins. In eight career appearances, including six starts, he is 0-5 with an 8.59 ERA. Gusto is getting this shot because the Marlins have two key starters on the injured list – right-handers Eury Perez (thigh muscle strain) and Janson Junk (shin bone inflammation).

Miami’s bullpen, on the other hand, has been solid, covering 11 2/3 innings over the past two games while allowing just three runs.

“With the guys we have (in the bullpen), all of them with plus stuff, I’ll take my chances against any lineup,” said Marlins closer Pete Fairbanks, who leads his team with 11 saves. “We have a variety of arm actions and movement profiles.”

Fairbanks, who has pitched in each of the past two games, likely will need a rest on Sunday.

On the injury front, Marlins slugger Liam Hicks was pulled from the lineup on Saturday due to lower-back stiffness. He leads the Marlins in homers (13) and RBIs (53).

Miami second baseman Xavier Edwards made the start despite a left thumb injury. Edwards, who has played in every game this season, went 0-for-5.

Miami’s win on Saturday pulled the team over .500 for the first time since April 13. The Marlins are 39-38 overall. They also have the best record in the majors for the month of June (13-4).

In addition, they have won five of their past six series including against the Giants, and they could have multiple All-Stars. Shortstop Otto Lopez leads the majors in batting average (.332), and the aforementioned Meyer is 8-0 with a 2.80 ERA.
