Veteran first baseman/outfielder Trey Mancini elected free agency on Monday after the Los Angeles Angels designated him for assignment last week.

Mancini passed through waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake, where he began his season, but declined the assignment in favor of free agency.

Mancini made his first major league appearance since July 2023 when the Angels selected his contract from Salt Lake on June 8. He started for the team that night against Houston and went 3-for-4, driving in a run during his first at-bat.

He played five games and made three starts for the injury-ravaged Angels, last playing June 14 before the Angels went the route of DFAing him. In that time, he went 4-for-13 with a triple and four RBIs.

Mancini, 34, missed the 2020 season while defeating Stage 3 colon cancer before making his return in 2021. In 836 MLB games, Mancini has posted a .263 batting average with 129 homers and 404 RBIs for the Baltimore Orioles (2016-22), Astros (2022), Chicago Cubs (2023) and Angels.

The Angels also reinstated designated hitter/outfielder Jorge Soler from the injured list and designated infielder Nick Madrigal for assignment.

Soler had an oblique strain and last appeared on June 3. He was batting .220 with nine homers and 33 RBIs in 58 games for Los Angeles.

Madrigal batted .273 in 15 appearances for the Angels this season. It was his first time in the big leagues since 2024 with the Cubs.
