U.S. Women’s National Team defender Emily Sonnett signed an extension with Gotham FC through the 2028 NWSL season, the club announced Thursday.
Sonnett, 32, has appeared in eight matches (five starts) this season. She has four assists in 77 appearances (70 starts) since joining the team in 2024.
“Emily has been an essential part of our team’s success,” president of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West said. “Her quality, consistency and standard of excellence have been incredibly valuable to our group, and we’re excited to have her continue with Gotham FC.”
In 2025, Sonnett helped Gotham set a team record with 11 clean sheets and allow just 25 goals in 26 matches. She ranked second in the league with 1,359 successful passes and seventh with 1,775 touches.
She has reached the NWSL championship game five times with four different clubs, claiming her third title last season with Gotham.
“I’m really excited to continue with Gotham FC,” Sonnett said. “This is a special group that holds itself to a high standard every day. I’m looking forward to building on what we’ve started here.”
Internationally, Sonnett helped the U.S. win the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Olympic gold medal. She also holds the record with eight SheBelieves Cup titles and has earned 118 caps since 2015.
