Former tennis standout Mardy Fish might have a burgeoning golf career on his hands.
The 44-year-old Fish won his third American Century Championship going away on Sunday, securing the victory with 72 points at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline, Nev.
Fish, who once peaked at No. 7 in the world while winning six singles championships and eight more in doubles over a 15-year tennis career, added to his trophy case by totaling six more points than closest competitor Joe Pavelski in the modified Stableford scoring system.
“I think I played the right sport, but I am obsessed with this game,” Fish declared to NBC following the event. “I do love playing. This is the best week of the year. It’s the best email of the year when you get the invite.”
Pavelski, a retired hockey player trying to win his second straight title at one of golf’s premier celebrity events, bogeyed on Hole 17, leaving him in need of an eagle to catch Fish. Hunting for an eagle, Pavelski put a shot in the water instead.
Golden State Warriors future Hall of Famer Steph Curry finished in third place with 59 points. LPGA star Annika Sorenstam (58) was fourth and former MLB pitcher John Smoltz (55) was fifth.
