Eduard Lowen converted a penalty for the eventual match-winner in the 86th minute, and St. Louis City recovered from a blown two-goal lead to defeat visiting Sporting Kansas City 3-2 on Thursday night.

In its first match since May 23, St. Louis (5-6-4, 19 points) saw a two-goal lead vanish as Capita Capemba and Dejan Joveljic scored for Sporting KC (3-10-2, 11 points) to make it a 2-2 contest.

But after VAR ruled that SKC defender Ethan Bartlow had committed a handball in the scoring area, Lowen struck the ensuing penalty past Kansas City goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland to make it 3-2 with just under five minutes remaining. It was Lowen’s second goal of the season.

St. Louis opened the night’s scoring in the 28th minute on an awkward sequence. As Conrad Wallem went up to meet a cross from Tomas Totland with his head, he made contact with Cleveland in front of the net.

The ball eventually fell to Jeong Sang-bin, who made it 1-0 with a half-volley at the near post for his second goal of the season.

Marcel Hartel doubled St. Louis’ advantage in the 36th minute. Simon Becher’s through ball found the goalward run of Hartel, who fired it through the legs of Cleveland and into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. It was Hartel’s team-high fourth goal of the season.

Kansas City, seeking a first road win over St. Louis since 2023, made it 2-1 in the 42nd minute on Capemba’s dazzling strike in the 42nd minute before Joveljic leveled the score in the 76th minute following a giveaway by St. Louis goalkeeper Ben Lundt. Capemba’s goal was his second of the season, while Joveljic leads Sporting KC with seven goals.

St. Louis, though, took the lead for good on Lowen’s late penalty to pick up its first win over SKC since Sep. 28, 2024.

Lundt, starting in place of Roman Burki, was credited with zero saves on two Kansas City shots on goal. Cleveland stopped three of the six shots he faced.

St. Louis and Sporting KC are level in 11 all-time meetings, including playoffs (4-4-3).
