Ivan Herrera’s walk-off double lifts Cardinals past Cubs in 10

Ivan Herrera capped a three-run rally with a walk-off, two-run double in the 10th inning and the St. Louis Cardinals snapped a three-game losing skid with a 3-2 win over the visiting Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night.

Pete Crow-Armstrong broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the top half of the 10th inning against Luis Gastelum (2-1) before the Cardinals rallied in the bottom half against Trent Thornton (3-4).

With runners on the corners and no outs, Thornton walked JJ Wetherholt to load the bases before a run scored on Jordan Walker’s forceout. Herrera followed with a two-run double to left field.

Chicago was held to one hit before Crow-Armstrong’s 424-foot blast over the right-center wall for his team-high 24th homer.

Herrera had three hits for St. Louis, which had lost the first two games of the four-game set by a combined score of 17-5.

The Cubs recorded their lone hit against St. Louis starter Dustin May when Alex Bregman hit a ground-rule double with two outs in the fourth inning. Bregman was stranded on Ian Happ’s flyout.

May issued two walks and three strikeouts over five innings.

Chicago starter Matthew Boyd retired eight straight batters after giving up a two-out double to Herrera in the first inning.

Boyd walked Jose Fermin to load the bases with two outs in the sixth inning, but he escaped unscathed when Blaze Jordan popped out to catcher Miguel Amaya on the first pitch.

St. Louis was held scoreless by Boyd, who yielded four hits with two walks and five strikeouts over seven innings.

Chicago put a runner on second with two outs in the ninth before Riley O’Brien intentionally walked Pedro Ramirez to face Dansby Swanson, who flied out to shallow right field.

After Caleb Thielbar struck out the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth inning, Blaze Jordan lined a double into the left-field corner. The game went to extra innings when Nathan Church popped out.
