Cade Povich pitched six shutout innings in his first major league game in nearly three months as the Baltimore Orioles topped the visiting Los Angeles Angels 3-1 in the series opener Tuesday night.

Pinch hitter Tyler O’Neill homered and Pete Alonso delivered a two-run single for the Orioles, who had been shutout victims in their two previous games and won despite collecting only four hits.

It was a strong homecoming for Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez, but he was saddled with the loss despite logging seven innings. The right-hander was a former highly regarded Orioles prospect, pitching for Baltimore in 2023 and 2024 before an injury wiped out his 2025 season.

Nolan Schanuel had two doubles and scored the only Los Angeles run in a game that began about 24 hours after both teams were busy trading away key players at the trade deadline. Wade Meckler and Josh Lowe also had two hits for the Angels, who lost for the sixth time in their last seven games.

Povich had been injured and on minor league assignments since last pitching for Baltimore on May 7. He limited the Angels to seven hits and one walk while striking out seven.

Yennier Cano, the third reliever for the Orioles, pitched the ninth for his second save despite surrendering Lowe’s leadoff double.

Rodriguez gave up two runs, three hits and one walk while striking out six.

The Orioles scored in the third inning when Christian Franklin, in his first big-league plate appearance, worked a leadoff walk and Colton Cowser followed with a single. Carlos Narvaez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Franklin and Cowser came home on Alonso’s one-out single.

Baltimore wasted a scoring chance in the seventh after Coby Mayo’s one-out triple. He was thrown out at the plate on Franklin’s fielder’s choice grounder.

The Angels got on the board in the eighth on back-to-back one-out doubles from Schanuel and Vaughn Grissom.

But the Orioles countered in the bottom of the inning on O’Neill’s one-out blast off Mitch Farris.
