New OC Sean Mannion: Eagles will ‘lean into’ tush push

Whether it’s called the “tush push” or the “brotherly shove,” the Philadelphia Eagles plan on using their signature short-yardage play during the 2026 season.

“It’s going to be a part of what we do. It’s been an extremely effective play here,” the team’s new offensive coordinator, Sean Mannion, said Saturday morning. “We’re going to lean into that. It’s something this organization has executed at a high level. So along with many other elements to our offense, certainly, it’s something that will be a part of it.”

The effective play has been the topic of discussion among fans and opposing teams. The Green Bay Packers, in fact, led a charge to ban the play prior to last season. The proposal fell two votes short of the 24 required, however.

Critics have cited several issues with the rugby-style play, from aesthetics to competitive reasons.

The “tush push” typically features Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts taking the snap in short-yardage situations and driving his legs forward while being pushed from behind by one or more players.

The Eagles hired Mannion as their offensive coordinator in January. He previously was the quarterbacks coach of the Packers.

Mannion, 34, became Philadelphia’s fourth offensive coordinator in the past four years under head coach Nick Sirianni. The Eagles relieved Kevin Patullo of offensive coordinator duties earlier in January after one season in the role.

Mannion joined the Green Bay staff as an offensive assistant in 2024 and was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2025.

The Eagles finished the regular season 24th in the NFL in total offense (311.2 yards per game), 23rd in passing offense (194.3 per game) and 19th in scoring offense (22.3 ppg) — with the total offense and scoring ranks representing low points of Sirianni’s five-year tenure. They were held to 19 points in a home loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round on Jan. 11. Philadelphia parted with Patullo two days later.
