Jackson Jobe made a successful return from arm surgery with five shutout innings, Eduardo Valencia contributed a sun-aided, two-RBI double to a six-run seventh and the Detroit Tigers spoiled a San Francisco Giants pregame celebration with an 8-0 victory Saturday afternoon.
On a day when the Giants unveiled tributes to Buster Posey, Brandon Belt, Joe Panik, Brandon Crawford and Pablo Sandoval on their Wall of Fame at Oracle Park, the home team was limited to two hits by Jobe and relievers Tyler Holton and Ty Madden.
Jobe (1-0) was pitching at the major league level for the first time since May 28, 2025, a home outing against the Giants after which a decision was made for him to have Tommy John surgery.
He was brilliant in his rematch with the Giants more than 14 months later, allowing just one hit and one walk in his 71-pitch effort. He struck out four.
Giants starter Landen Roupp (7-11) matched zeroes with Jobe for five innings before appearing to tire in the sixth, walking three of the four batters he faced to load the bases with one out.
Keaton Winn came on and walked Spencer Torkelson to open the scoring before striking out Max Clark and Javier Baez to limit the damage to one run.
Roupp was charged with just the one run on two hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked five and struck out three.
All told, Giants pitchers walked nine.
After Holton replaced Jobe to start the last of the sixth and enjoyed a 1-2-3 inning, the Tigers broke the game open in the seventh, using doubles by Zach McKinstry, Dillon Dingler and Valencia, and a triple by Clark as the foundation. Valencia’s pinch-hit liner to center field in a 3-0 game that was lost in the sun by Drew Gilbert was the only multiple-run hit of the uprising.
Holton and Madden, pitching two innings apiece, retired 12 of the 13 batters they faced to complete the Tigers’ 13th shutout of the season.
Clark and Baez each had two of the Tigers’ 10 hits as the visitors rang up a sixth win in eight contests on a nine-game Western trip that ends Sunday. Clark added a second RBI in the ninth on a groundout.
Willy Adames had the Giants’ only hit off Jobe, a one-out single in the fourth in a scoreless game. Jobe then got Rafael Devers to ground into an inning-ending double play.
