Jo Adell hit a go-ahead, two-run homer and the Cleveland Guardians held off the host Detroit Tigers 6-4 on Wednesday.

Angel Martinez had three hits, including two doubles, while scoring a run and driving in another. Angel Genao added an RBI double and Chase DeLauter contributed two hits and scored a run.

Foster Griffin (13-4) recorded his first win since being acquired from the Washington Nationals. Griffin gave up three runs — one earned — with three strikeouts and a walk in five innings. Cade Smith got the last four outs and survived a ninth-inning jam to notch his 31st save.

Spencer Torkelson drove in two runs and Gleyber Torres homered for the Tigers, who had won eight of their previous 10 games. Framber Valdez (7-8) gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Cleveland loaded the bases in the first on a walk, infield single and hit batter. Adell bounced into a double play grounder to score Steven Kwan before Martinez doubled to left to knock in DeLauter.

The Tigers tied it in the bottom of the inning. Dillon Dingler reached on third baseman Jose Ramirez’s one-out error. Two batters later, Hao-Yu Lee doubled to put runners in scoring position and Torkelson knocked them in with a double to center.

Torres gave Detroit a 3-2 lead in the third with a leadoff homer to left. That advantage held up until the fifth.

Ramirez drew a one-out walk before Adell smashed a Valdez changeup over the left field wall. Cleveland extended its lead to 6-3 in the seventh.

Martinez had a one-out double and Genao ripped a double to right to knock him in. Austin Hedges followed with an RBI single off Enmanuel De Jesus.

The Tigers cut it to 6-4 in the eighth. Kevin McGonigle walked and moved to third on Zach McKinstry’s single. Smith entered the game for Hunter Gaddis and threw a wild pitch that allowed McGonigle to score.

Detroit threatened in the ninth. Javier Baez and Torres singled to put the pressure on Smith. The Cleveland closer then struck out Dingler and induced McGonigle to bounce out, ending the game.
