Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Dustin May, drilled in the upper back by a comebacker on his first pitch against the host New York Mets on Wednesday, exited the contest and underwent X-rays that were negative.

The Brewers announced midgame that May sustained a bruised right shoulder blade.

In the bottom of the first inning, May threw a 96 mph pitch that A.J. Ewing lined to the mound, with the ball coming off the bat at 106 mph. May turned and was struck in the back. The ball ricocheted to third baseman David Hamilton, who fielded the ball and threw to first base to retire Ewing.

Members of the Brewers medical team and coaches came out to check on May, who was clearly in discomfort. He soon left the field and was replaced on the mound by left-hander Robert Gasser.

May, 28, was acquired by the Brewers along with reliever JoJo Romero in an Aug. 3 deal that sent two minor-leaguers to the St. Louis Cardinals.

In four starts for Milwaukee, May is 1-1 with a 5.87 ERA. On the year overall, he is 6-8 with a 4.56 ERA in 25 starts. He has 118 strikeouts and 42 walks in 124 1/3 innings.

May owns a 25-28 career record with a 4.06 ERA in 96 games, including 82 starts, for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2019-23, 2025), Boston Red Sox (2025), St. Louis (2026) and Milwaukee (2026). He was part of the Dodgers’ 2020 World Series championship team, when he finished 1-0 with a 4.22 ERA in seven postseason appearances, including three starts.
