Austin Wells went 2-for-2 with a two-run go-ahead single to highlight a five-run 10th inning as the New York Yankees beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-3 on Wednesday in the decisive game of a three-game series in Anaheim, Calif.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Wells pulled a 1-2 fastball from Luke Murphy (0-2) past the glove of diving second baseman Christian Moore into right field to drive in automatic runner Amed Rosario and Jose Caballero, who had singled. Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham and Ben Rice each followed with an RBI single.

Bellinger went 3-for-5 while Rice and Paul Goldschmidt also had two hits for New York (80-60). David Bednar struck out three in the ninth to pick up the win (7-3). Michael Fulmer yielded two runs, one earned, in the bottom of the 10th.

Yankees starter Cam Schlittler allowed one run on two hits in eight innings, with no walks and nine strikeouts. He threw 99 pitches, 71 for strikes. Schlittler permitted one run or none for the 19th time in 29 starts this year.

Vaughn Grissom went 2-for-4 with a homer and Moises Ballesteros hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the 10th for Los Angeles (53-87), which lost for the ninth time in 10 games. It marked the sixth straight extra-inning defeat for the Angels, who fell to 4-13 in extra-inning contests.

New York took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Rosario lined a ground-rule double down the right field line, driving in Bellinger, who had singled and advanced to second on an infield single by Rice.

Schlittler allowed a leadoff single to Grissom in the second inning, then retired 17 batters in a row until Grissom tied it 1-1 on a homer with two outs in the seventh, a 408-foot drive to dead center.

Angels starter Reid Detmer, who entered the contest with a 1.55 ERA in eight starts following the All-Star break, left after allowing one run on six hits over seven innings. He struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter while throwing 99 pitches, 76 for strikes.
