Cole Carrigg, Adael Amador and Ezequiel Tovar had two hits apiece, and the Colorado Rockies rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-7 in Denver on Saturday night.
Brennan Bernardino (4-3) got the win and Jordan Romano picked up his 15th save for Colorado (55-87).
Joshua Baez and Ivan Herrera homered and finished with two hits each for St. Louis, which lost ground in the National League wild-card chase. The Cardinals (71-72) are four games behind Arizona for the final NL playoff spot.
Thomas Saggese and Leo Bernal also had two hits apiece for St. Louis.
Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore retired the first 10 batters before walking Connor Norby with one out in the fourth. He got Hunter Goodman to pop out to first and TJ Rumfield on a grounder to third to end the inning.
With St. Louis leading 3-0, things unraveled in the fifth inning. Carrigg’s leadoff single was Colorado’s first hit, and three straight one-out singles cut the deficit to 3-2. Liberatore uncorked two wild pitches against Jake McCarthy, the second for a walk, allowing Amador to score the tying run.
Luis Gastelum entered but couldn’t stop the onslaught, as Tovar scored on a double steal and Norby singled to drive in McCarthy. Norby scored on Rumfield’s bloop double to center to make it 6-3.
Liberatore (5-14) allowed five runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings and lost his eighth consecutive decision. He has not won since July 11th, a stretch of nine starts.
St. Louis got two back in the sixth on Nolan Gorman’s RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Saggese. Colorado responded in the seventh inning on Goodman’s two-run single and Carrigg’s run-scoring single.
Goodman raced home from third on Zac Veen’s squeeze bunt to cap the four-run inning.
Jose Fermin had an RBI double and Herrera added a run-scoring single in the ninth before Romano recorded the final two outs.
Baez’s solo homer in the second and Herrera’s two-run homer in the fifth, his 16th, gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.
Rockies starter Mason Adams left after giving up a single to Alec Burleson. He allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings.
