Seattle Mariners reliever Matt Brash has been shut down for the rest of the season after an MRI showed continued inflammation in his right lat.

Brash, 28, first landed on the 15-day injured list on May 1 with inflammation in his right lat. He returned briefly, only to return to the IL on June 10. He had been on track to return sometime this month before feeling discomfort during a recent bullpen session in Boston.

The MRI on Thursday revealed the inflammation, although Brash does not have any structural damage.

“He will be shut down for eight weeks. So that’s obviously his season,” general manager Justin Hollander said on Friday. “We’re not really sure what’s causing the problem right now. He just needs more rest.

“What we’re seeing is that he’s not getting full healing. Even when he began his throwing progression, it was improved but not gone. The recommendation was to throw and see how it went, and we were super encouraged by the way that went until we hit this plateau. So that tells me — and that tells our docs and everyone — that we just need to shut it down and see where we are in eight weeks.”

Brash’s season will end with only 20 appearances. He has posted a 0.54 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings.

In 190 appearances through his first four seasons, Brash has a 3.06 ERA with eight saves and 242 strikeouts in 185 1/3 innings. He missed the 2024 season following Tommy John surgery.
