Heriberto Hernandez and Javier Sanoja homered as the host Miami Marlins snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating the Chicago Cubs 10-3 on Sunday afternoon.
Hernandez, Sanoja, Joe Mack and ex-Cubs outfielder Owen Caissie all finished with two RBIs as Miami broke open a tied game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Despite the loss, the Cubs (81-63) took two of three games from the Marlins (72-72).
Chicago was led by MVP front-runner Pete Crow-Armstrong, who slugged his 40th home run and posted two RBIs. He is the first Cubs player to have a 40-homer season since Derrek Lee in 2005.
Clay Holmes (6-7), acquired from the Mets at the trade deadline, took the loss. He allowed six hits, three walks and eight runs in 4 1/3 innings. In 14 previous starts this season, the most runs he had allowed in a game was four. His ERA on Sunday rose from 2.09 to 2.83.
Tyler Phillips (5-6) earned the win, allowing five hits, one walk and three runs in five innings.
Miami opened the scoring with two runs in the second. Jakob Marsee singled and Hernandez walked before they executed a double steal. The Marlins then got RBIs from Mack (groundout) and Otto Lopez (single).
The Cubs cut their deficit to 2-1 in the third as Carson Kelly singled, advanced to third on Tyrone Taylor’s double and scored on Crow-Armstrong’s sacrifice fly.
Each team scored in the fourth inning, as the Cubs plated a run on Nico Hoerner’s double-play grounder and the Marlins got Hernandez’s homer, his team-high 24th of the season.
Chicago tied the score 3-3 in the fifth on Crow-Armstrong’s homer.
But in the bottom half, the first five Miami batters reached, starting with walks by Graham Pauley and Kyle Stowers around a single by Sanoja to load the bases.
The Marlins then cashed in with Griffin Conine’s hit-by-pitch, Caissie’s two-run, bad-hop single past first baseman Michael Busch and RBI singles by Hernandez and Mack.
Miami extended its lead to 10-3 in the seventh as Lopez bunted for a hit, and Sanoja homered to left.
