Daniel Schneemann singled home automatic runner Angel Genao in the 10th inning, giving the Cleveland Guardians a 3-2 win over the visiting Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
Patrick Bailey led off with a single up the middle off Kyle Finnegan (3-1) before Schneemann lined the no-out pitch into right field. It was Cleveland’s third walk-off win in the four-game series.
The Guardians (73-71) moved back into the final American League wild-card position by one-half game over the Toronto Blue Jays. Detroit (65-78) dropped 7 1/2 out of the spot.
All-Star closer Cade Smith (5-1) earned the win with two perfect innings, striking out five. Finnegan entered to begin the 10th after Kenley Jansen worked the ninth for the Tigers.
Brayan Rocchio belted his third homer in the series for the Guardians, tying the score at 2-2 in the fifth. Riley Greene had a pair of doubles for Detroit, including a two-run hit in the first.
Guardians starter Gavin Williams struck out 11 over six innings, giving up two runs on four hits with three walks in 99 pitches. He now leads the majors with 228 strikeouts, one more than Milwaukee Brewers phenom Jacob Misiorowski.
Oft-injured Tigers starter Jackson Jobe tied his season high with five innings of two-run ball, matching his career best with seven strikeouts. The right-hander gave up four hits and walked two, retiring 11 straight after a rough first.
Greene’s double in the first scored Hao-Yu Lee and Colt Keith. Greene had tied his career high with four hits and had four RBIs one night earlier.
Cleveland pulled within 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning on Travis Bazzana’s double that brought around Steven Kwan. They would load the bases with one out before Jobe struck out Genao and retired Bailey on a grounder.
Guardians rookie outfielder Chase DeLauter missed his second straight game with a sprained right wrist. Jose Ramirez was given the day off to rest his surgically repaired left wrist.
