Rookie Joshua Baez and Leo Bernal each had three hits and drove in two runs Friday night for the St. Louis Cardinals in a 7-3 victory against the visiting Chicago White Sox.
Alec Burleson had two hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals, whose own hopes remain dim in the National League wild-card race. The Cardinals (73-75) did manage to strike a blow against the first-place White Sox’s chances of winning the American League Central.
Chase Meidroth hit a pair of home runs for Chicago, which had its division lead trimmed to a half-game over the second-place Cleveland Guardians (75-73), who beat the Minnesota Twins 5-2 on Friday. The White Sox (75-72) lost their fourth straight game.
Baez hit an RBI single against Anthony Kay to break a 2-2 tie in the third inning after Meidroth went deep in each of his first two at-bats against Matthew Liberatore. Meidroth has 14 home runs on the season.
The Cardinals added three runs in the fifth, with Burleson hitting an RBI single, Baez an RBI double and Bernal an RBI single for a 6-2 lead. Bernal also brought in Baez with a seventh-inning single.
Gordon Graceffo (8-1) entered in the fifth to get two outs in relief of Liberatore, who allowed two runs, six hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings. Liberatore struck out two.
Kay (9-9) allowed three runs, five hits and a walk while fanning two over four innings. Trevor Richards gave up three runs in two innings.
Jordan Walker had two hits and two runs for St. Louis, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Closer Riley O’Brien pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning in a non-save situation.
Randal Gricuk joined Meidroth in collecting two of Chicago’s nine hits. Colson Montgomery went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and a walk.
The White Sox have scored a combined eight runs in their losing streak, which began with a three-game sweep at the hands of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
