Lando Norris turned in a time of 1:31.824 to close Q3 Saturday and claim the pole position of the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring street-racing circuit in Madrid.
The Sunday race will feature the 19-time pole winner in the lead spot. The McLaren racer narrowly edged Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli at 1:31.835.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen eased into third with a time of 1:31.964, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton had to settle for fourth (1:32.013) after he took P1 during earlier runs.
Fifth will be helmed by Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc (1:32.019).
The rest of the top ten, in order, was Mercedes’ George Russell, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, Red Bull Racing’s Liam Lawson, Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad.
The home crowd had little to cheer for on Saturday. Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, of Spain, found himself in 18th initially, while countryman Carlos Sainz of Williams incurred a penalty. Sainz was subsequently dropped to 20th, lifting Alonso into 17th.
