Atlanta United carried play throughout Saturday’s match with D.C. United but the clubs settled for a scoreless draw at Washington.

It was the second time this season that the teams have played a 0-0 game. The first came March 21 in Atlanta.

Atlanta United’s best chance came just seconds before the match was called. Luke Brennan’s header in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time hit the crossbar.

Atlanta United outshot D.C. United 19-4 and put four shots on target, while D.C. never placed a shot on goal.

Atlanta United (6-14-5, 23 points) are 0-2-2 over their past four matches following a three-game winning streak.

D.C. United (6-7-11, 29 points) owns a three-game unbeaten streak (1-0-2).

Atlanta possessed the ball more than 62% of the time but couldn’t solve veteran Sean Johnson, who made two saves for his sixth shutout of the season and 115th MLS regular-season clean sheet. He ranks third in league history.

Atlanta’s Lucas Hoyos didn’t face any shots.

Atlanta United had an opportunity in the 64th minute, but Miguel Almiron sent a left-footed shot over the crossbar.

One minute later, D.C. United created a chance, but Tai Baribo’s header went over the net. Baribo has scored 14 of D.C.’s 30 goals this season.

In the 80th minute, Atlanta United had a corner kick and the ball made its way to Breel Embolo, whose bicycle kick hit the left goalpost. It wouldn’t have counted if it had gone in because the official called offside on Embolo.

Atlanta United outshot D.C. United 8-3 in the first half.

D.C. United defender Kye Rowles twice thwarted Atlanta opportunities. He blocked Embolo’s right-footer from inside the box in the 10th minute and knocked away Jay Fortune’s right-footer from outside the box in the 42nd minute.

Almiron misfired on a left-footed chance in the 22nd minute.
