Shin Ohashi broke the 200m breaststroke world record by more than a half-second on Thursday at the Asian Games in Tokyo.
At just 17, the Japan native became the youngest male swimmer to break an individual, long-course world record since Michael Phelps, who was 17 when he broke the 400m individual medley world record in 2002.
Ohashi swam the 200m breaststroke 2:04.83; the previous record was 2:05.48 by China’s Qin Haiyang at the 2023 World Championships. Ohashi also beat his personal best of 2:06.59 by a healthy margin.
Ohashi just made his debut at a senior major international last month at the Pan Pacific Championships. He won the silver medal in the 200m breast at the 2025 World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships.
