World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will not compete in the Shanghai Masters due to a lingering knee injury, he announced Saturday.
The 25-year-old Italian star still has not played a competitive match since his July 12 triumph over Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final.
Sinner took down Novak Djokovic in the Shanghai final in 2024.
“Unfortunately I won’t be able to play at the Rolex Shanghai Masters this year as I had hoped,” Sinner wrote on Instagram Stories. “I always enjoy playing in front of the Shanghai fans and I’m very sorry that I won’t be able to do so next week. Thank you for all your support. I’m looking forward to seeing you again next year!”
The Shanghai Masters event starts Wednesday and runs through Oct. 18.
Defending champion Valentin Vacherot will return to defend his title, while four-time champion Djokovic, Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Daniil Medvedev and Flavio Cobolli will vie for the crown.
Sinner has a 44-3 match record in 2026, including his fifth career Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and ATP 1000 titles at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome.
