Toronto FC scored two goals in the game’s dying minutes to secure a vital 2-1 win over CF Montreal in a dramatic 401 Derby.
Substitutes Lewis Morgan and Djordje Mihailovic provided a much-needed spark to Toronto’s (7-10-11, 32 points) offense with goals in stoppage time to complete the comeback against Montreal (6-16-6, 24 points).
Mihailovic, the former Montreal man, met Theo Corbeanu’s cross at the back post and blasted it past a helpless Sebastian Breza to clinch the game for the home side.
In the eleventh minute, Montreal goalkeeper Breza turned away Toronto’s best opportunities of the first half in close succession, denying Daniel Salloi at the far post and scrambling back to his feet to paw away Matheus Pereira’s attempt from the edge of the goal area.
Daniel Rios put his team ahead in the 52nd minute, nudging a rebound into an open goal. Former Toronto striker Prince Owusu played a brilliant through ball to Matty Longstaff in the box, whose powerful, close-range attempt goalkeeper William Yarbrough spilled into Rios’ path.
Salloi played Theo Corbeanu into space, forcing a diving save out of Breza in the 69th minute. Owusu struck the post in the 80th minute for the visitors.
Morgan got on the end of Niklas Dorsch’s cross to tie the game 1-1 in second-half stoppage time.
Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran was forced off in the 23rd minute with an apparent lower-body injury after an awkward fall. The veteran Yarbrough made his club debut and his first MLS appearance in more than two years.
Montreal head coach Philippe Eullaffroy persisted with the back-three formation he deployed in their previous outing against Cincinnati.
Defender Brayan Vera picked up a yellow card in his first appearance since Sep. 9. Walker Zimmerman (ankle) missed his second straight match after sitting out against Nashville on yellow card accumulation.
