Andrei Svechnikov’s second goal of the game lifted the Carolina Hurricanes to their sixth consecutive victory by beating the Washington Capitals 4-2 on Tuesday night in Raleigh, N.C.
Svechnikov, who also had an assist, gave the Hurricanes their first lead with 4:04 remaining with a power-play tally. Carolina had been 0-for-4 on power plays until that sequence.
Eric Robinson and Mark Jankowski, whose empty-net goal came with 1:27 remaining, also scored for the Hurricanes, who avenged a 5-2 loss to the Capitals in the same arena less than two weeks earlier. Sebastian Aho posted two assists. Pyotr Kochetkov made 20 saves.
Boone Jenner and Justin Holl had Washington’s goals, and Ryan Leonard provided two assists. Logan Thompson stopped 31 shots, but the Capitals lost their second game in a row.
Svechnikov has compiled six goals and five assists in the season’s first eight games.
The Hurricanes revealed earlier in the day that captain Jordan Staal will miss at least a month with a calf injury.
Jenner opened the scoring with the game’s only first-period goal. Svechnikov put Carolina on the board 3:58 into the second period.
Holl and Robinson scored later in the period for a 2-2 tie.
Jankowski’s goal enabled him to extend the best opening stretch of his career with his fifth goal this month.
Hurricanes forward Taylor Hall played less than 4 1/2 minutes as he exited with an apparent injury.
It was the beginning of Capitals star Alex Ovechkin’s farewell tour since he announced last week this would be his final season. This marked the final regular-season game in Raleigh for the Capitals, who selected the winger in the 2004 NHL Draft that was held in the same building where Tuesday night’s game was played. Ovechkin had two shots on goal in 13 minutes of ice time.
Washington didn’t convert on its two power plays.
