Desmond Bane, Magic avenge lopsided loss to Raptors

Desmond Bane scored 28 points and Franz Wagner finished with 26 points and 11 assists to lead the Orlando Magic to a 121-114 bounce-back win over the host Toronto Raptors on Friday night in the teams’ NBA Cup opener.

Scottie Barnes paced Toronto with a career-high 41 points on 19-of-34 shooting, five rebounds and five assists before fouling out.

But it wasn’t enough to prevent the Magic from earning some payback after losing 129-99 at Toronto on Wednesday night.

Orlando led by as many as 12 points at 77-65 with 7:19 left in the third quarter following a 3-pointer by Wagner, who also grabbed five rebounds and shot 8 of 18 from the field.

The Raptors answered with an 11-3 run and eventually took a 102-100 lead on an Immanuel Quickley 3-pointer with 8:38 left in the fourth quarter.

The Magic responded with a 3-pointer by Anthony Black to highlight a 12-3 surge and never trailed again. Bane sealed the victory with four free throws in the final 24 seconds.

Bane shot 6 of 12 from 3-point range and added six assists, while Black finished with 17 points and 10 assists. Wendell Carter Jr. had 20 points and seven rebounds, and Jamal Cain scored 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.

For the Raptors, Quickley totaled 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds, while Collin Murray-Boyles had 15 points off the bench. Jakob Poeltl posted 12 points and 11 rebounds. Orlando limited RJ Barrett to nine points on 3-of-10 shooting in 34 minutes.

The Magic shot 18 of 34 (53%) from 3-point range, while the Raptors went 11 of 27 (41%).

The Raptors were unable to replicate the defensive success they had in their three previous wins, as Orlando limited its turnovers to 13.
