The fourth-seeded Kansas City Current advanced to the NWSL semifinals with a 1-0 victory over visiting Angel City on Saturday, scoring the winning goal on Michelle Cooper’s penalty kick six minutes into extra time.
The Current will face the winner of the Sunday quarterfinal between top-seeded Gotham FC, the reigning champion, and No. 8 Seattle Reign next weekend.
During a corner kick in the third minute of extra time, Kansas City defender Kayla Sharples was knocked down after making contact with Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson and midfielder Ary Borges in front of the net, resulting in a penalty kick. Cooper converted her first penalty attempt of the season, blasting a shot into the left side of the net past a diving Anderson.
Anderson made five saves, while Kansas City goalkeeper Lorena stopped two shots. The Current outshot Angel City 20-12, putting six attempts on target compared with two for the visitors.
