Georgia up to No. 4, LSU holds No. 1 in AP poll

Georgia, coming off a win at Auburn, moved past Alabama to the No. 4 spot in the Associated Press Top 25 poll released Sunday.

LSU remained No. 1, receiving 54 first-place votes. No. 2 Ohio State picked up five first-place votes, while third-ranked Clemson received the top nod on the other three ballots.

Georgia’s 21-14 win at Auburn, combined with the season-ending injury to Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, allowed the Bulldogs to inch up one spot while the Crimson Tide dropped to fifth, which matches last week’s rankings from the College Football Playoffs selection committee.

Alabama did extend its record for consecutive appearances in the top five of the AP poll to 67 weeks.

The rest of the top 10 is No. 6 Oregon, Utah, Oklahoma, Penn State and Florida.

Minnesota lost for the first time on Saturday at Iowa and dropped four spots to No. 11. Baylor also suffered its first defeat, squandering a 28-3 lead at home to Oklahoma, with the Bears falling only one spot to No. 13.

Michigan is 12th, with Wisconsin 14th, followed by Notre Dame, Auburn, Cincinnati, Memphis, Iowa and Boise State.

SMU is 21st and Oklahoma State is at No. 22.

Three newcomers to this week’s poll round out the Top 25 — No. 23 Appalachian State, No. 24 Texas A&M and No. 25 Virginia Tech. The Hokies are making their season debut in the poll, having won five of their past six games, with the only loss in that stretch being a 21-20 setback at Notre Dame.

Navy (21st), Texas (22nd) and Indiana (24th) dropped out of the Top 25 after losses.
