Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State
- Height: 6-3; Weight: 226
- 40 time: 4.64
- Projection: First Round
OVERVIEW
A Minnesota native who was recruited by teams more as a safety than as a quarterback, Lance decided to go down to the FCS level so he could stay at his preferred position.
Lance redshirted his first year with the program, but would end up taking over the starting quarterback job in 2019. His performance was stunning as a first year starter, as he led the Bison to a 16-0 finish while throwing no interceptions on the year.
Lance’s buzz began to intensify after becoming draft eligible heading in the 2020 season, and the decision to move their season to the spring led to an early declaration rather than playing through a redshirt sophomore campaign.
STRENGTHS
- Packing one of the stronger arms in the class and a massive frame, Lance’s talents jump out when compared to the FCS competition. His ability to test defenses at every level of the field and create with his legs makes him a danger for any opponent.
- While not an elusive runner, Lance is strong through contact and can consistently create yardage after hits.
- He’s fairly accurate, consistently keeping the ball out of danger with his placement.
WEAKNESSES
- His processing speed is still a work in progress and he must get faster with going through progressions as a pro.
- Natural physical tools allowed him to improvise his way to success on most occasions in college.
- Overall lack of polish is going to make the learning curve a bit tougher and he could require some time before taking over a starting role.
PRO COMPARISON
Cam Newton, Patriots: Newton has taken a steep drop from the early performances in his career, but his arm talent and running ability made him a deadly weapon in his prime. Lance brings similar physical tools and toughness as a runner.
