Serena Williams has been chasing Margaret Court’s Open Era grand slam record since winning the Australian Open 31 months ago for her 23th career major title.
Williams has struggled through an injury-plagued 2019 that most recently included withdrawing from the Rogers Cup final due to a back injury and then withdrawing from the ensuing event in Cincinnati. She has now scratched from matches in two tournaments this year and retired from two others.
She hasn’t played since, but the 38-year-old Williams is still the betting favorite heading into the start of the U.S. Open next week.
PointsBet lists Williams at +450, while DraftKings has her at +500 in what is considered a wide open women’s draw. Simona Halep, who dominated Williams in the Wimbledon final last month, is +750 by PointsBet and +650 by DraftKings.
Naomi Osaka retired from her semifinal match in Cincinnati due to a left knee injury. The reigning U.S. Open champion is the third betting favorite along with Ashleigh Barty at +800 by PointsBet, while DraftKings has Barty at +800 and Osaka at +1000.
FanDuel also has Williams as the favorite at +490, with Halep and Barty the co-second favorites at +750 and higher odds on Osaka (+1200) than the other two sportsbooks.
Last year, Williams reached the singles final in Flushing Meadow, where she is a six-time champion.
Williams’ sister, Venus, is being offered at +6500 by FanDuel, +8000 by PointsBet and +15000 by DraftKings. She is a two-time U.S. Open winner, with the most recent coming in 2001 in a finals victory over Serena.
