Southern Cal is sticking with JT Daniels as its starting quarterback.
“We feel confident where we are right now and felt like we needed to move forward and to allow more reps for the guys that are going to be in the No. 1 and No. 2 position,” Trojans coach Clay Helton said. “For us, it was just the consistency that (Daniels) had over the 30 practices. He was consistent day in and day out in doing his assignments and making the plays and moving the team.”
An 11-game starter as a true freshman, Daniels was competing with redshirt sophomore Jack Sears, redshirt junior Matt Fink and true freshman Kedon Slovis, who will begin the season as USC’s primary backup. Helton changed offensive coordinators, hiring Graham Harrell in the offseason.
The Gatorade High School Player of the Year at California’s Mater Dei High School, Daniels enrolled early at USC at age 17 and won the starting job last season. He had 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, passing for 2,672 yards as just the second true freshman starting quarterback at USC.
Slovis was a four-star recruit and enrolled in spring 2019 to participate in offseason workouts.
