ATP roundup: Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas have rematch in Barcelona

Casper Rune

Third-seeded Casper Ruud will meet fifth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in the finals on Sunday of the Barcelona Open Ban Sabadell in Spain.

It’s a rematch of the finals last week, won by Tsitsipas for his third Rolex Monte Carlo Masters in four years and 11th career victory on tour.

Ruud of Norway won in straight sets Saturday over No. 13 Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina, 7-6 (6), 6-4. Ruud, ranked sixth in the world, converted three of six break-point opportunities and won 78.6 percent (33 of 42) of his first serve points.

Tsitsipas of Greece, ranked seventh in the world, needed three sets to eliminate Dusan Lajovic of Serbia, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Tsitsipas overcame six double faults with a 5-0 advantage in aces and converting 3 of 4 on break points, compared to 1 of 3 for Lajovic.

Tiriac Open

Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics ousted the highest-remaining seed, No. 4 Alejandro Tabilo of Chile, 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals in Bucharest, Romania.

Fucsovics will play for the title against Argentina’s Mariano Navone, the fifth seed who eliminated qualifier Gregoire Barrere of France, 6-3, 6-4 in the other semifinal.

Fucsovics displayed power with a 12-3 advantage in aces while not committing a double fault. He converted 3 of 6 on break points.

Navone was good on 5 of 14 on break-point conversions and won 73.2 percent (30 of 41) of his first serve points. Earlier on Saturday, Navone upset top seed and fellow countryman Francisco Cerundolo 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, in a quarterfinal match suspended by darkness after two sets on Friday night.

BMW Open

Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff cruised into the finals, where he will face third-seeded Taylor Fritz of the United States after both won in straight sets in the semifinals in Munich.

Fritz defeated unseeded Cristian Garin of Chile, 6-3, 6-4. Garin saved nine of 11 break-point opportunities in defeat.

Struff, the fourth seed, dispatched Denmark’s Holger Rune, the second seed, in a 45-minute match, 6-2, 6-0. Struff had an 8-0 edge in aces and won 95 percent (19 of 20) of his first-serve points, to 50 percent (13 of 26) for Rune.

Earlier Saturday, Struff completed a quarterfinals match suspended by darkness on Friday night, defeating fourth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, 7-5, 6-4.
