Daniil Medvedev has split with longtime coach Gilles Cervara after another disappointing first-round exit at a Grand Slam tournament.

He made the announcement on Instagram.

“Thank you Gilles,” the 29-year-old Russian wrote in his Sunday post. “Amazing 8-10 years together, 20 titles, world number 1 but most importantly a lot of fun moments and memories that will stay with us forever. I am grateful to you for guiding me through all these years and let’s see what life brings us in the future.”

Their last act together was Medvedev’s loss last week to unseeded Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, who also took out Medvedev in the first round at Wimbledon. The New York match will be remembered for Medvedev becoming irate with the official as Bonzi was serving for match point in the third set and egging on the crowd as play was disrupted for about six minutes.

Medvedev staged a furious rally but lost in five sets, with Bonzi winning 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 0-6, 6-4. After the match, Medvedev sat on the bench and demolished his racket, slamming it against the ground, and ultimately was fined $42,500 for his conduct during and after the match.

The U.S. Open capped a season of frustration for Medvedev, who won the U.S. Open in 2021. He also lost in the first round at the French Open and has no tournament wins in 2025. He is 26-18 on the season.

The Athletic reported Medvedev made the decision to part with Cervara after returning home to Monaco and giving thought to his future. He also is parting ways with longtime fitness trainer Eric Hernandez.

Medvedev is expected to speak with numerous candidates before choosing a new coach, per The Athletic.

In his own Instagram post, Cervara wished Medvedev well.

“I thank you for placing your trust in me. I gave EVERYTHING, every second, for our shared goals,” he wrote. “I loved training you, coaching you, supporting you (even when it was difficult), and finding solutions with you and the team to help you perform.

“I will keep in mind your unconventional magic as a player, which is your strength. It will return, I’m sure.”
