Blake Snell took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Austin Nola singled home the only run in the second as the San Diego Padres beat the visiting St. Louis Cardinals 1-0 on Wednesday.
The Padres blanked the Cardinals for a second straight night. St. Louis took a third consecutive shutout loss for the first time since the final three games of the 2015 season. San Diego logged its fifth straight win — and third shutout victory in four games.
Snell (8-9) wound up allowing two hits and two walks in seven innings while equaling his career high with 13 strikeouts. Josh Hader worked a perfect inning for his 34th save.
Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas (11-13) gave up one unearned run on three hits in six innings.
Yankees 14, Pirates 2
Aaron Judge doubled twice and remained at 60 home runs as host New York routed Pittsburgh for its 11th win in 15 games. The Pirates took their sixth straight loss.
Judge doubled, struck out, doubled, grounded out and walked. He reached base for the 20th straight game and upped his average to .317 — tied with Boston’s Xander Bogaerts for the American League lead.
Oswaldo Cabrera and Gleyber Torres drove in five runs apiece for the Yankees. New York’s Luis Severino (6-3) returned from missing two months with a lat strain and allowed one run on two hits in five innings.
Astros 5, Rays 2
Kyle Tucker clubbed a mammoth two-run homer in Houston’s three-run eighth inning as the Astros swept their three-game series with Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Astros, who have won 10 of their past 11 games and seven straight series, outscored the Rays 14-2 in the series.
Lance McCullers Jr. (4-1) fired seven innings of two-run ball. Ryan Pressly earned his 30th with a scoreless ninth.
Diamondbacks 6, Dodgers 1
Madison Bumgarner gave up one run on one hit over six innings as Arizona finished off a victory at Los Angeles.
Bumgarner (7-15) beat his longtime National League West nemesis for the first time since 2017, having been winless over a stretch of 12 prior starts vs. the Dodgers. He struck out five and walked one.
Christian Walker had a pair of RBI singles for the Diamondbacks, and Corbin Carroll hit a three-run double. Mookie Betts homered for the Dodgers’ lone run.
Cubs 4, Marlins 3
Chicago scored three runs — on zero hits — in the eighth inning, rallying to defeat host Miami.
Leading 3-1, Miami brought in reliever Steven Okert (5-5) in the eighth, and he walked the first two batters, Zach McKinstry and Christopher Morel. Esteban Quiroz then placed a sacrifice bunt to the left of Okert, whose throw to first was wild, allowing McKinstry to score.
David Bote hit a grounder to shortstop Miguel Rojas, whose throw home went off Nick Fortes’ glove, allowing Morel to score and tie the game at 3. Ian Happ followed with a sacrifice fly to cap the rally and give Chicago the lead.
Nationals 3, Braves 2
Joey Meneses hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to help visiting Washington rally for a win against Atlanta to avoid a three-game sweep.
Meneses and Tres Barrera each had two hits for the Nationals, who ended a three-game losing streak. Andres Machado (2-0) earned the victory in relief, and Kyle Finnegan pitched the ninth for his 11th save.
Ronald Acuna Jr. and Michael Harris II had two hits each for the Braves, who had won five in a row and clinched a playoff spot with a 3-2 win against the Nationals on Tuesday night. Jesse Chavez (4-2) gave up Meneses’ decisive homer.
Orioles 8, Tigers 1
Jordan Lyles pitched a complete game when Baltimore desperately needed it in a victory against visiting Detroit.
Lyles (11-11) tossed a three-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks. He threw 94 pitches. It was the first complete game for a Baltimore pitcher since John Means had a no-hitter in May 2021 at Seattle.
Kyle Stowers hit a two-run homer and an RBI single for the Orioles, who had lost four of their previous five games. Kerry Carpenter homered for the Tigers.
Brewers 6, Mets 0
Mike Brosseau’s pinch-hit grand slam capped a five-run seventh inning for host Milwaukee, which avoided being swept by beating New York in the finale of a three-game set.
The teams were locked in a scoreless duel until the sixth, when Willy Adames led off the home half of the inning by homering off Mets starter Taijuan Walker (12-5).
Trevor Gott (3-2), the third of six Brewers pitchers, tossed a hitless sixth inning. The Mets didn’t get a hit over the final four innings against four relievers. Walker gave up four runs on six hits in six-plus innings.
Phillies 4, Blue Jays 3 (10 innings)
Matt Vierling, who had his first career five-hit game, hit a walk-off single to center field off Adam Cimber with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to rally host Philadelphia past Toronto.
J.T. Realmuto hit a home run in the eighth for the Phillies, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Dalton Guthrie and Kyle Schwarber each added an RBI single later in the eighth as Philadelphia rallied from a 3-0 deficit.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a three-run homer, his 30th of the season, in the eighth. Bo Bichette added two hits for the Blue Jays.
Royals 5, Twins 2
Salvador Perez went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI as host Kansas City defeated Minnesota.
Perez drove in a run for the sixth straight game to lead the Royals, who will attempt to complete a three-game sweep on Thursday. Anthony Misiewicz (1-1) picked up the win after throwing 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. Scott Barlow earned his 23rd save.
Bailey Ober (1-3) gave up three runs in five innings for the Twins, who lost for the sixth time in the past seven games.
Reds 5, Red Sox 1
Jonathan India broke a tie with a fifth-inning single and finished with two RBIs as Cincinnati beat visiting Boston.
Kyle Farmer snapped an 0-for-18 skid with a bloop two-run single in Cincinnati’s three-run fifth that made a winner of starter Chase Anderson (2-3). Anderson gave up one run on three hits over five innings.
Boston starter Connor Seabold (0-3) yielded four runs on six hits in five innings.
Rangers 7, Angels 2
Adolis Garcia drove in two runs and Josh H. Smith launched a home run and had two RBIs to help power Texas over Los Angeles in Arlington, Texas.
Leody Taveras provided some insurance with a two-run single in the eighth inning, and the Rangers bounced back after losing the series opener on Tuesday.
Texas right-hander Dane Dunning (4-8) allowed two runs on three hits in five innings. Angels left-hander Tucker Davidson (2-7) was charged with three runs on five hits in five innings.
Guardians 8, White Sox 2
Triston McKenzie struck out 13 batters over eight innings to fuel visiting Cleveland to a victory over Chicago.
Josh Naylor launched a two-run homer and rookie Steven Kwan had a solo shot among his three hits for the Guardians, who have won 12 of their last 14 contests. Cleveland’s Will Brennan added an RBI single in his major league debut.
Yoan Moncada launched a homer to lead off the fourth inning and Gavin Sheets had an RBI single in the seventh for the White Sox, who have lost the first two contests of the pivotal three-game set.
Athletics 2, Mariners 1
James Kaprielian outlasted Robbie Ray in a brilliant pitchers’ duel as host Oakland made it two straight over Seattle.
After Kaprielian and Ray had matched zeros for 6 1/2 innings, the A’s took advantage of the Seattle bullpen to put up the game’s first two runs in the last of the seventh. An error scored the first run, and Tony Kemp followed with a sacrifice fly.
Kaprielian (4-9) fired seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Ray gave up three hits in six shutout innings. Erik Swanson (2-1), who didn’t retire a batter, was charged with both Oakland runs.
Giants 6, Rockies 1
Logan Webb took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning, Wilmer Flores had three hits and San Francisco beat Colorado in Denver.
Brandon Crawford, Austin Wynns, Joc Pederson and LaMonte Wade Jr. had two hits each for the Giants, who won their third straight game. Webb (14-9) gave up one hit and no walks in 5 1/3 innings. He fanned five.
Elehuris Montero homered for the Rockies. German Marquez (8-12) yielded four runs, three earned, on nine hits in five innings.
