Medina Spirit won the Kentucky Derby but a second drug test result likely is to be returned before the final leg of the Triple Crown next month. The result could remove Medina Spirit as the Derby winner and from the Belmont field. Rombauer opened as the second favorite to Essential Quality, a 3-1 morning line favorite coming out of the Preakness over the weekend. Essential Quality broke out of the starting gate at the Kentucky Derby as the favorite.
Medina Spirit is not listed on the morning line.
The 153rd Belmont Stakes ($1.5 million purse) is more lucrative than the Preakness, and multiple Derby entries skipped the second of three Crown races to be ready to run in New York.
