The state of Ohio will be the latest to have access to sports wagering when the program goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2023.
Sports wagering was approved by Ohio lawmakers in December, with a buffer of just over a year created to establish rules and regulations for the industry, as well as accept applications to provide sports wagering.
Casinos, racetracks and sports teams all were welcome to apply for a license, while also being able to contract with at least two mobile betting vendors.
The launch timetable will be too late for the upcoming NFL and college football regular seasons but will allow for wagering during the NFL playoffs and select bowl games, including the college football national championship game on Jan. 9.
Ohio has eight professional sports teams, as well as a NASCAR race and a PGA Tour event. All of those entities were expected to apply for a sports wagering license, as were the state’s four casinos and 11 racetrack/casino properties.
Ohio is the 33rd state that has passed legislation allowing domestic sports wagering, with Washington, D.C., also launching wagering options.
