United States Men’s National Team defender Sergino Dest is recovering from a torn ACL and will miss this summer’s Copa America tournament.
Dest, 23, sustained the knee injury during training with his Dutch club PSV Eindhoven on April 20. He confirmed the extent of the injury Wednesday on social media.
“I want to give you an update on the injury myself,” Dest said in a video posted on X. “I tore my ACL. Hearing it (the news) was very painful. I will be out for a long period of time.
“Soon I will be operated on and then I will work on my recovery. It will be tough for me. I know that I will come out of this stronger, that’s for sure. For the rest, it is now to hope for the best and find the old version of myself again.”
The Copa America will take place in 14 cities across the U.S. from June 20 to July 14.
Dest has earned 33 caps with the USMNT since 2019.
He is on loan this season at PSV from Barcelona, where he signed a five-year contract in 2020. The Dutch-born Dest began his top-flight career in the Netherlands with Ajax in 2019.
