Dodgers jump Yankees as World Series favorites at one sportsbook

The Dodgers have catapulted to World Series favorites with at least one major sportsbook following the news of the blockbuster deal that will bring outfielder Mookie Betts and left-handed pitcher David Price to Los Angeles.

Less than 24 hours after the first report of the trade, the Dodgers (+350) had leapfrogged the New York Yankees (+400) at William Hill as favorites to win the 2020 World Series.

The Dodgers had pulled even with the Yankees at +350 at PointsBet, with the sportsbook offering a price freeze on Los Angeles at +550 as a promotional market until noon ET Wednesday.

“For a Dodgers team that’s been on the doorstep of a World Series title the past few years, if any one player is going to put them over the top, it’s Mookie Betts,” PointsBet USA CEO Johnny Aitken told Field Level Media. “We want to give bettors one final opportunity to get down on L.A. at a price they likely won’t be seeing again anytime soon.”

The Yankees were being offered at +350 by BetAmerica, DraftKings and PlaySugarHouse Wednesday evening, narrowly ahead of the Dodgers (+400) at all three books. FanDuel had the Yankees at +375 to the Dodgers’ +430.

PointsBet is also offering several Betts-related regular-season prop bets.

  • Batting average: Over/Under 292.5 (-110)
  • Home runs: Over/Under 32.5
  • RBIs: Over/Under 92.5
  • Win NL MVP: +550

Already favorites across the board to win the National League pennant, the Dodgers’ odds have tightened even further.

Los Angeles is now +150 to win the NL at PointsBet, with the Atlanta Braves the next closest at +600, followed by the reigning champion Washington Nationals at +700. The Dodgers are +170 to win the pennant at BetAmerica, +175 at William Hill, +190 at DraftKings and PlaySugarHouse, and +200 at FanDuel.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox’s odds plummeted after they agreed to offload two of their stars.

Before the deal was agreed to, DraftKings was offering Boston’s World Series odds at +2200. By Wednesday, the moneyline had risen to +3300.

The story was similar at BetAmerica, where the Red Sox’s World Series odds had ballooned from +2000 to +3300, and their American League pennant odds had risen from +1100 to +1600, although their regular-season wins over/under remained at 86.5.

The Houston Astros, who opened as +400 favorites at PointsBet shortly after the 2019 World Series concluded, are now third at the book at +550. William Hill has the embattled team at +500 following an offseason in which manager A.J. Hinch was fired as a result of the MLB investigation into a sign-stealing scandal.

The Astros are +600 at BetAmerica, DraftKings and PlaySugarHouse, and +650 at FanDuel.
