Eagles’ Carson Wentz decision likely tied to $32M March payment

For the Philadelphia Eagles, decision day on Carson Wentz comes in March.

Based on contract language, that’s when the Eagles must decide whether to keep Wentz for the 2021 season or possibly trade him to another team. Wentz is due a $10 million bonus and his $22 million salary for the 2022 season becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the NFL league year.

Trades are often agreed to — and even reported — in February but aren’t official until the league year begins.

Carson Wentz not interested in backup role

ESPN reported Sunday that Wentz is not interested in staying with the Eagles as a backup.

He was benched two weeks ago at Green Bay with the Eagles mired in a losing streak and 3-8-1 overall.

Rookie Jalen Hurts started last week and led the Eagles to an upset over the New Orleans Saints, with the second-round pick racking up 106 rushing yards.

The salary cap implications for the Eagles are almost identical whether they keep or trade Wentz.

The No. 2 pick in the 2016 draft has an annual average salary of $32 million, which places him in the top 10 among NFL quarterbacks.
