S2G Esports edged out Nongshim RedForce and Aurora Gaming to win the PUBG Mobile World Cup event Sunday in Paris.
The $3.025 million competition, part of the Esports World Cup, culminated with an 18-game grand final played Friday through Sunday. S2G Esports won three of the first 12 games to build a healthy lead entering Sunday, and it wrapped up the victory despite coming away with just one second-place finish and one third over six games.
The Turkish organization totaled 154 points in the grand final, with RedForce finishing at 149 and Aurora settling at 146.
While it marked S2G Esports’ first time earning Esports World Cup club points this summer, RedForce moved into 12th in the overall standings by collecting 750 points for second place and rising to 1,250 total. Meanwhile, Aurora remained in the top 10 at the World Cup, holding ninth place after receiving 500 points for third.
S2G also took home $555,000 for first prize, RedForce earned $293,000 and Aurora $210,000. Zhang “Qzz” Qingbo of China, playing for fifth-place Tianba, was named MVP of the finals and earned a $25,000 individual bonus.
The tournament began with 32 teams playing in a group stage Aug. 6-9. Teams were divided into two groups of 16 and played 12 matches. The top five teams from each group advanced straight to the grand finals.
The sixth through 13th teams in both groups moved onto a survival stage earlier this week and played another 12 matches. Tianba placed first in that stage and RedForce was third. Only the top six teams from that stage moved on to fill out the 16-team grand final.
In the final stage, 10 points were awarded for placing first in a game. Six points were awarded for second, five points for third and so on. One point was given to both the seventh- and eighth-place teams, and the bottom eight received zero placement points. However, all teams picked up one point per kill.
S2G’s best showing came Saturday in Game 8, when they took 10 points for a first-place finish plus another 15 for 15 kills.
Come Sunday, RedForce won Game 13 (eight kills) and Aurora won Game 16 (15 kills) to shore up their spots in the top three.
Prize money was distributed after each of the three stages, leading to uneven totals across the standings.
