Hamstring tear keeps Serena Williams out of US Open

Serena Williams

Serena Williams withdrew from the US Open with a torn hamstring.

Williams was injured at Wimbledon, withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics but had hoped to return to the Grand Slam scene in New York, where six of her 23 Slam titles were claimed.

On Wednesday, she explained her thought process via Instagram, saying she wanted to allow her hamstring to completely heal.

“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the U.S. Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring,” Williams wrote. “New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play — I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone from afar. Thank you for your continued support and love. I’ll see you soon.”

At Wimbledon, Williams retired in the first set of her first-round match with a right hamstring injury. Eight weeks have passed since the injury, but the risk of re-injury with severe hamstring pulls and tears is high.

Williams is one major victory from a tie for the all-time record of 24 Grand Slam titles, held by Margaret Court. Williams last won a Slam in 2017.

The US Open is set to being without Williams and several other prominent stars, including Switzerland’s Roger Federer, Spain’s Rafael Nadal and defending champion Dominic Thiem of Austria.
