Kansas’ Les Miles tests positive for COVID-19

Kansas coach Les Miles said Thursday he tested positive for COVID-19, is isolating at home and will do his job remotely.

“Although I will not physically be able to attend practice for the time being, I will be using the technology available for remote working to stay connected during staff meetings, meetings with players, etc.,” Miles said in a statement issued by the school.

“Thank you for your prayers and support in advance. I look forward to beating this virus and returning back to be with my team in person very soon. Rock Chalk!”

Miles, who turns 67 next month, is in his second season with the Jayhawks. He won a national championship with LSU, where he coached from 2005-16, in 2007. He also was the head coach at Oklahoma State (2001-04).

Will Les Miles miss a game?

The Jayhawks are 0-3 (0-2 Big 12) and have a bye this weekend. They next are scheduled to play at West Virginia on Oct. 17.

Athletic director Jeff Long said no other coaches tested positive. Recent test results for student-athletes were not immediately available.

“As long as Coach Miles does not develop symptoms or have a fever, we anticipate he will be able to coach the West Virginia game on Oct. 17,” Long said. “Kansas Team Health is working through the contact tracing protocols and notifying those individuals that may have been in close contact with him for an extended period of time. We wish Coach a speedy recovery and look forward to getting him back on the field very soon.”

Last season, the Jayhawks were 3-9 in Miles’ return to the sidelines. In his 18th season as a head coach, Miles has a 145-67 record.
