Kentucky Derby Odds: Essential Quality holds as 2-1 favorite

Essential Quality has maintained his odds as the 2-1 favorite by TwinSpires to win the 147th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

Essential Quality will run out of the No. 14 post in the 19-horse race (King Fury was scratched), which traditionally hasn’t been the successful starting point in the Derby. Middle Ground (1950) and Carry Back (1961) are the lone two horses to emerge victorious from that position at the Kentucky Derby.

Essential Quality has won the 2021 Southwest Stakes and emerged victorious in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2020. The colt is trained by Brad Cox, who aims to become the first Louisville (Ky.) native to win the Derby.

Rock Your World, who won the Santa Anita Derby earlier this month, is listed at 5-1 odds and will start from the No. 15 post. That post also served as the beginning for Authentic, who won the 2020 Kentucky Derby.

Florida Derby winner Known Agenda has 6-1 odds and will start at the No. 1 post, while Hot Rod Charlie is listed at 8-1 odds and will come out of the No. 9 post.
