Europe holds 2-point lead over USA at Solheim Cup

Team USA made a modest gain on its rival in Sunday's foursomes and four-ball, but Team Europe held onto the Solheim Cup lead at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Europe leads 9-7 in points entering Monday's 12 singles matches.

The Americans won three of the morning's four foursome matches before the Europeans regained one point in the afternoon four-ball session. Lizette Salas and Jennifer Kupcho pulled off a late comeback by winning four straight holes at Nos. 14-17 to prevail 3 and 1 over Sweden's Anna Nordqvist and Finland's Matilda Castren.

"I think honestly after yesterday, we were also 2-down and came back and won," Kupcho said, "so I just kept telling myself, hey, we can turn this around, and we did."

To kick off the foursomes, Danielle Kang and Austin Ernst defeated England's Georgia Hall and Sweden's Madelene Sagstrom 1 up. Kang and Ernst lost their first two holes before winning the fourth, sixth and seventh holes to push ahead. They'd go on to lose the lead, eventually win it back on consecutive holes at Nos. 13 and 14 and finish with four straight par saves to eke out the win.

Lexi Thompson and Brittany Altomare recorded a birdie at No. 17 to beat Charley Hull of England and Emily Kristine Pedersen of Denmark 2 and 1.

For the second straight day, world No. 1 golfer Nelly Korda was part of a losing side for Team USA, as she and Ally Ewing felt 5 and 4 to England's Mel Reid and Ireland's Leona Maguire. The Europeans went 4 up through five holes and never looked back.

"(Maguire) is just impressive," Reid said. "You know, to take down Nelly twice is obviously a big ask and the way we did it, I'm just really proud we put some points on the board."

Yealimi Noh and Mina Harigae were the only American duo to earn a point during four-ball, winning 3 and 1 over France's Celine Boutier and Germany's Sophia Popov.

The rest of the day went Europe's way. Hull and Pedersen grabbed a lead at the eighth and never let go en route to a 3 and 2 win over Kang and Ernst. Carlota Ciganda of Spain and Nanna Koerstz Madsen of Denmark took the lead with Ciganda's birdie at No. 15 and hung on for a win over Jessica Korda and Megan Khang, 1 up.

"It was so much fun. Carlota has so much passion, and she's like, 'vamos, let's go,'" Koerstz Madsen said. "It was really cool. We really match each other really good out there. If someone made a mistake then the other one kind of took over."

Salas and Kupcho halved their match with Reid and Maguire to split a point.

Team Europe is the defending champion of the biennial event and needs 14 points to retain the cup. The Americans need to reach 14 1/2 points to win.
