The U.S. Open and the Western & Southern Open tennis tournaments could be played as a doubleheader in New York City, the New York Times reported Tuesday.
A proposal being volleyed by the United States Tennis Association considers the potential postponement or cancellation of the top events in American tennis, which are scheduled for August and September.
The Billie Jean King National Tennis Center would house the men's and women's events, moving the Western & Southern from the Cincinnati, Ohio, area.
The timing could work, but uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic and whether tennis could be played in August might delay any decision.
The Western & Southern Open, which is the oldest tennis tournament in the United States (1899) played in its original city, would be scheduled from Aug. 17-23. That would lead into the U.S. Open, scheduled for Aug. 31 through Sept. 13.
All tennis events have been canceled due to the coronavirus since early March.
